"It was time for something a bit more… well ‘more’. I wanted wider rims, even greater strength and stiffness, with a considerable weight reduction too – and that was never going to come cheap. I was also pinch flatting the rear a lot due to the Gyro’s disregard for taking it steady in rock gardens (and the narrower rims), so I wanted something that was wide and tubeless ready without resorting to ghetto or converting. In the end it was American Classic’s All Mountain 29ers that fitted the brief perfectly, and while not cheap, they look like good value compared to most of the alternatives."

"These wheels are light and track and steer beautifully. They’re also relatively easy to maintain or repair thanks to the cartridge-style bearings and standard-sized spokes, all held in a 24mm deep, aluminium rim."

"At an amazing 600g for the 15mm front, 712g for the 135mm DX rear, and 7g for the pair of valve stems, our1,319g Race 26 Tubeless is among the lightest aluminum wheelsets going.  In true American Classic style, this light weight doesn’t come at the expense of footprint"

By specifications alone these wheels are something unprecedented and without much competition. Now they only have to hold up to our riding, not let us down in stiffness and durability. If they manage, they may well alter our view of what is possible with alloy wheels.

Compared to American Classic's heavier All Mountain Tubeless wheels, the MTB Race wheels are more flexible, mostly up front. Besides the need for regular maintenance, they have held up exceptionally well for such a lightweight wheelset and I have been using them almost exclusively. I work my bike pretty hard laterally and these wheels have never burped a tire. The tires hold solid to the rim and never roll over or feel wobbly - and that's saying something for a big guy like me. At 1480 grams, I'll bet they compete with carbon wheels from Easton or Specialized - and cost less. If you ride pretty hard and want to go the lightweight direction, I could recommend American Classic MTB Race wheels, as long as you have the skills or the resources to keep them tuned up.- ER

“The latest piece of awesome to leap out of Bill Shook's brain is a new rim design resulting in a fantastically light set of tubeless wheels,” says writer Jered Gruber.
